What Is Tallow, and How Is It Made for Skincare?
Tallow is a natural skincare ingredient made by gently rendering the fat (suet) from grass-fed, grass-finished cattle. It’s not new - just forgotten. For centuries, tallow was a skincare staple across cultures, prized for its ability to heal, protect, and deeply nourish the skin.
What makes tallow special? It's fatty acid profile closely resembles human skin, meaning it absorbs easily, doesn’t clog pores, and helps repair the skin barrier. It’s naturally rich in bioavailable vitamins A, D3, E, and K2, all critical for skin regeneration and elasticity.
The rendering process matters. At VAER, we use a slow, low-heat boil in salt water. This purifies the fat without destroying its nutrients. The result is a clean, stable, scent-neutral balm base - free from highly-processed seed oils, synthetic fillers, or preservatives.
When paired with other whole ingredients like jojoba oil, beeswax, calendula oil and sometimes essential oils, tallow becomes the backbone of a skincare ritual that your skin actually recognizes.
This isn't about going backwards. It’s about remembering what worked - and doing it better.
